November 14, 2007 - PureSpectrum completes successful internal testing on dimmable CFL ballast technology

Superior electronics developed by PureSpectrum, Inc. (Pink Sheets: PSPM) may make a dependable, affordable dimmable Compact Fluorescent Lamp (CFL) an immediate reality for lighting manufacturers.

In an effort to give manufacturers an alternative product that could spur sales of dimmable CFL bulbs, PureSpectrum is using engineering ingenuity to address consumer complaints by enabling CFL bulbs to perform more like incandescent bulbs. Using a Sylvania lamp powered by a ballast built with PureSpectrum’s proprietary ballast technology,  director of engineering Ray King has developed an electronic ballast topology which internal testing has confirmed will allow a 19W CFL bulb to be dimmed to as low as 10 percent of full light output without any negative consequences in performance or durability.

“During our internal testing, we did not experience any heat buildup or other negative impacts on the lamp or the ballast,” King said. “In other words, a CFL with this ballast can be plugged into a standard dimming socket and will operate just like an incandescent that people are accustomed to having in their homes.”

Consumers are hooked on dimming devices that were installed to regulate inefficient incandescent bulbs. As incandescent bulbs are being phased out in favor of energy efficient CFL bulbs, consumers are looking for a dimmable CFL product that will integrate seamlessly with existing dimming mechanisms.

Manufacturers have struggled to marry conventional light bulb performance with the need to meet higher energy efficiency standards, but there are various versions of dimmable CFL bulbs currently on the market and most of the major name brands in the industry list a dimmable CFL in their product lines. Current iterations of dimmable CFL bulbs are often expensive and difficult to find on store shelves, and consumer complaints include slow start times, humming or buzzing during operation and poor light quality after dimming.
