INDUSTRY OVERVIEW

Consumers are getting into conservation.

Since Thomas Edison.s invention of the carbon-filament lamp and a direct-current generator for incandescent electric lighting in 1879, technology in the lighting industry has evolved slowly. In fact, besides changes to filaments over the past 120-plus years, Edison.s original incandescent design has remained intact. As a result, current energy-hungry, heat-producing incandescent light bulbs continue to waste unnecessary energy at exorbitant costs.

This factor, coupled with recent domestic and international energy shortages, has resulted in a heightened focus on the need for energy-efficient lighting options. Consumers are slowly beginning to realize that improving lighting efficiency is one of the fastest ways to decrease energy bills and preserve our environment. Today, consumers face a myriad of alternative energy-efficient lighting, including fluorescent, compact fluorescent lighting (CFL.s), high-intensity discharge and low-pressure sodium lamps.
